The 1970-hit single “Rievkooche-Walzer”* launched the successful career of the Bläck Fööss (lit. ‘bare feet’ in the local dialect). Their combination of electric guitars, jeans, long hair and bare feet on stage raised a few eyebrows among members of the conservative carnival societies.
Today, 50 years later, the Bläck Fööss have become the city’s figureheads and a Cologne trademark. They have developed into a musical institution, and their popularity has spread far beyond the region. For more than 5 decades the group has, with a few changes in band members, inspired Cologners with their empathetic, critical lyrics and their impressive variety of different styles. In their songs they paint a loving picture of life in Cologne’s quarters, without, however, losing sight of topical world affairs. The group has an inter-generational fan base and their songs can be heard in kindergartens as well as old people’s homes.
This special exhibition at the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum takes visitors on a journey in time spanning the group’s 50-year career. It is a history that is inextricably linked to that of Cologne – from the student revolt in 1968, the ‘Arsch-Huh’ (lit. ‘a kick in the pants’) movement and the 1990s to the present. One of the show’s focal points will be the exploration of the groups mythical status. The exhibits include unique objects from the private collections of the group members as well as memorabilia collected by the fan community. Also on display will be exhibits relating to those facets of the city’s history that the musicians have addressed in their songs.
Naturally, music will also play an important part in this exhibition. There will be a number of audio points and a sing-along booth with many surprises in store for the show’s visitors. In addition, the free app “Den Bläck Fööss auf der Spur” (following in the footsteps of the Bläck Fööss) will be available for both children and adults.
An exhibition celebrating the 50th anniversary of the popular music group from Cologne!
